What Is Nvidia and Open AI’s $100B Deal?

Nvidia and Open AI have just announced a strategic partnership to establish 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems to boost Open AI’s infrastructure. This will further revitalize Open AI’s ongoing effort for superintelligence. Nvidia will invest around $100B in the deployment of their systems. The plan is to initiate the first phase in the second half of 2026 via the Nvidia Vera Rubin platform.

What Is the Importance of Nvidia-OpenAI $100B Deal?

As per CEO of Nvidia, the deal is quite “monumental in size” in the landscape of AI technology. This reiterates the close relationship between Nvidia and Open AI, who have been quite instrumental in driving the current AI boom. The market demand for Nvidia’s Graphics Processing Unit increased ever since Open AI launched its first version of ChatGPT in 2022. Open AI still utilizes GPUs to create its software and deliver it to the users. Though it looks like Nvidia is playing a heavy hand with this deal, the partnership is going to be profitable for them in the longer run.

It also emphasizes the significance of Nvidia technology in future Open AI projects. In order to develop future next-generation AI models that can do more than present models. Open AI was already in requirement of growing number of chips to help its users. The company has emphasized that it requires approximately 700 million active users on a weekly basis.

Open AI maintains a strong relationship with all of its investors which includes Microsoft, Thrive Capital, and Soft Bank.

How Will This Investment Be Deployed?

Both companies have revealed that the investment will be progressively deployed with continuous development of infrastructure. It is also clear that Nvidia will be the right supplier for Open AI for networking gear as well as chips. Nvidia is dominating the market as far as AI chips are concerned. In August 2025, Nvidia CEO said that developing one gigawatt of data center costs around $60 billion and $50 billion. Out of this amount, approximately $35 billion is for Nvidia systems and chips. Open AI and Nvidia have said that the new deal will be kickstarted with the first phase starting in the second half of 2026.

What Open AI Needs to Do Well in Future?

After the announcement, Sam Altman made it clear that Open AI needs to do following things in future:

  • Open AI must invest a lot in AI research.
  • Open AI needs to create products that people wish to utilize.
  • The tech giant also needs to figure out the right way to deal with infrastructure challenges.

A Short Note on Nvidia’s Recent Investments

Though this investment is comparatively higher compared to Nvidia’s recent investments, the company has indeed expanded its investment plans across various companies in the industry. Quite recently, Nvidia announced that it now has a $5 million stake in Intel and will be collaborating on numerous AI processors. Nvidia also invested around $700 million on a UK-based data center startup called Nscale. As per CNBC, the company has also spent $900 million to recruit Enfabrica CEO Rochan Sankar and other CEOs, and to license the technology of the company.

Conclusion

This strategic partnership will empower Open AI to establish Nvidia systems-powered AI datacenters with 10 gigawatts of power. To help Open AI boost its intelligence infrastructure, Nvidia is planning to invest $100B progressively with deployment of each gigawatt. This will fuel Open AI’s ongoing quest for superintelligence and will take AI landscape to another level.
